The death of Greater Heal

There has been a bit of discussion about the decline of Greater Heal (GH) and the rise of Flash Heal (FH).  Previously I have argued that GH still had its uses and shouldn’t be removed from your bar.

However I have started contemplating builds post-3.1 and it seems 3.1 will almost certainly be the death sentence of GH.  Here’s why…

Skill priority will be something like this:

PW:S > Penance > Flash Heal > Renew = PoM > Greater Heal

Disc will be using Penance on cool down and FH when otherwise.  Even DA stacks to 10k now so bigger individual bubbles are no more useful than many smaller (stacking) ones.  Disc has no incentive to use GH.

Improved Flash Heal (3/3 – Reduces the mana cost of your Flash Heal by 15%, and increases the critical effect chance of your Flash Heal by 10% on friendly targets at or below 50% health) is really just the final nail in the coffin for Disc and Greater Heal.

Holy has a swag of reasons to ignore GH:

Surge of Light (2/2) – Your spell criticals have a 50% chance to cause your next Smite or Flash Heal spell to be instant cast, cost no mana but be incapable of a critical hit. This effect lasts 10 sec.

SoL encourages removal of GH so there are less buttons to manage.

Holy Concentration (3/3) – Your mana regeneration is increased by 50% for 8 sec after you critically heal with Flash Heal, Greater Heal, Binding Heal or Renew.

More fast heals mean more chance for crits which mean more mana regen.

Serendipity (3/3) – When you heal with Binding Heal or Flash Heal, the cast time of your next Greater Heal or Prayer of Healing spell is reduced by 20%. Stacks up to 3 times. Lasts 20 sec.

Serendipity could be used for GH, but with high volume raid damage and Holy’s common assignment to raid healing i’d be using it on the PoH.  We might see a trend to a FH, FH, FH, GH combo to maximise the use of this talent, but I doubt it.

Holy will be (is) using a lot of FH in between AoE healing.

The only talents in either school which benefit GH and not FH is Improved Healing (3/3 – reduces the mana cost of your Lesser Heal, Heal, Greater Heal, Divine Hymn and Penance spells by 15%) in Holy.  Which brings me to another point, will anyone bother with Improved Healing post 3.1?  Look at the spells it boosts.  How many of those are being used on a regular basis by a Holy priest?  Sadly the alternatives a are pretty limited ATM.  Probably 2/2 in Holy Reach, instead of 1/2, and 2/2 in Healing Focus (Reduces the push back suffered from damaging attacks while casting any healing spell by 70%)?  I’ll be interested to see if the ‘build masters’ (who ever they be) are taking Improved Healing.

Alas poor Greater Heal I barely knew you at all…

Greater heal is what holy will use and Flash heal is for Disc.

Thats what ive been seeing lately.

I was doing some basic theory crafting (I’m not very good) yesterday because I was really bored at work, and despite its slow cast and huge mana cost, if you can make sure the heal has as minimal overheal as possible, it will still be one of a holy priest’s most efficient spell(if you want to take points in the Empowered Healing talent). I know most disc priests go for Flash, and only cast Gheal when absolutely needed, but with the addition of the Improved Flash Heal talent, it should be a cemented decision for disc priests to stop using Gheal.
