A first look at 3.2 priest changes

v3.1

This isn’t going to be a detailed post with all the calculations in it.  It is just a summary of changes and how it will effect stat weights and gear lists.

For reference here are the existing calculations for 3.1 mechanics and the posts linked from that one.

Existing stat weights:

Disc Holy
MP5 1.0000 1.0000
Spirit 0.3223 0.5222
Intellect 0.8915 0.6890
SP 0.6000 0.6000
Crit rating 0.3564 0.3763
Stamina 0.2000 0.2000
Haste rating 0.2925 0.3059

Proposed 3.2 changes:

1) 20% less Replenishment

Replenishment: This buff now grants 1% of the target’s maximum mana over 5 seconds instead of 0.25% per second. This applies to all 5 sources of Replenishment (Vampiric Touch, Judgements of the Wise, Hunting Party, Enduring Winter Frostbolts and Soul Leech).

3.1 MP5 of Replenishment is:

This results in 19943 x 80% x 0.25% x 5 = 199 MP5 for Discipline and 17806 x 80% x 0.25% x 5 = 178 MP5 for Holy.

New 3.2 MP5 of Replenishment equals:

  • Discipline = 19943 x 80% x 1% = 160 MP5 (about 39 MP5 less than in 3.1)
  • Holy = 17806 x 80% x 1% = 142 MP5 (about 36 MP5 less than in 3.1)

3.1 Intellect MP5 value from Replenishment is:

  • Intellect MP5 weighting for Replenishment (Disc) = 0.1725
  • Intellect MP5 weighting for Replenishment (Holy) = 0.15

New 3.2 Intellect MP5 value from Replenishment is:

  • Discipline = 80% x 1% x Mana gained per Intellect (15) x Mental Strength bonus (1.15) = 0.138
  • Holy = 80% x 1% x Mana gained per Intellect (15) = 0.12

2) 25% more MP5 on gear – i’m assuming this will be retrospectve, so existing gear with MP5 on it will get 25% more when 3.2 goes live.

Currently I have about 90 MP5 on my gear.  In 3.2 this would be 90 x 1.25 = 112 MP5 (about 22 MP5 more than in 3.1).  Compare this with the replenishment nerf above and you’ll see Turkelife will lose about 14-17 MP5 overall in 3.2.

To simulate this on the existing gear I am increasing the stat weight of MP5 by 25%.  So 1 + (1 x 25%) = 1.25

New 3.2 stat weights:

Disc Holy
MP5 1.2500 1.2500
Spirit 0.3223 0.5222
Intellect 0.8570 0.6590
SP 0.6000 0.6000
Crit rating 0.3564 0.3763
Stamina 0.2000 0.2000
Haste rating 0.2925 0.3059

Plug these numbers into your favorite loot ranking tool and compare them with my 3.1 gear lists here and/or here.  OK, back?  What did you notice?  I noticed very little difference in gearing priority.

So the short story is, dont change your gearing in anticipation of 3.2.  Perhaps just hold onto any gear with MP5 on it, just in case the 25% buff to MP% on gear becomes a 100% buff or similar.

Tier 8 priests are losing about 14-17 MP5 overall in 3.2.

Gobble gobble.

Oh noes, not mah MP5s! D:

I am >.< at the moment. It seems Blizz is saying to priests that we need MP5, we need spirit, we need crit, we need haste.. we need everything!! damn really.

If you check the available gear with mp5:

it is quite easy to see why the mp5 change cannot affect our loot ranking that much: there’s simply a lack of it. If your wear i213 gear, then there is little you can change. If you wear better gear, then downgrading your ilvl to get mp5 might not prove better.

But the changes are all but subtle. In theory (that is, if itemization were not an issue) mp5 would reign our model quite badly. From design point of view, I’d say that is sloppy. Int and Spi have a rather complex model worked out with a lot of talent synergy. MP5 now beats that, almost brainlessly. Hardly elegant.

Yeah looks like they almost designed away from MP5 on gear in Ulduar, but now they have changed their mind.

I’m not sure why you’ve changed the MP5 stat weighting. In effect this keeps the values of the gear the same and modifies the scale. Leaving MP5 = 1 means that gear score changes and the scale stays the same, and since the gear is changing…. 🙂

  6. BobTurkey says:

@Firebert – This is because the gear doesn’t yet have the increased MP5 on it and I want to simulate the gear list with it on. For example using imaginary gear with 100 MP5.

    3.1 gear piece = 100 MP5 x MP5 stat weight (1) = 100
    3.2 gear piece with 25% more MP5 = 125 MP5 x 1 = 125

To simulate this difference before the gear gets its updated MP5 value I instead increase the stat weight by 25%. So 3.1 gear piece = 100 MP5 x MP5 stat weight (1.25) = 125.

    Does this make sense?

  7. Firebert says:

Yeah, that’s a bit better, but the bold part of your OP kinda makes it a bit moot 😛

Also, I’ve just offspecced Holy, but only have one set of gear. Should I rank the gems out and have best of both worlds (1 gear, two specs), or just wait till another set drops? I’m nowhere near Uld level. (Guild raids Naxx10, VoA10, OS10, and others, to varying degrees of success)
